Control-Command-Shift Your Perspective: A few thoughts on strategic project management

Project managers do more than manage timelines and track tasks—they lead. But too often, PMs are seen (and treated) as administrative support instead of the strategic, people-savvy leaders they are. This session is a call to action: to stop waiting for permission, drop the imposter syndrome, and embrace the real impact of the role. We’ll explore how PMs can lead with clarity, confidence, and connection—regardless of title—by focusing on relationships, decision-making, and presence. Whether you’re a career PM or wearing the hat unofficially, this talk will remind you that your power is in how you lead, not just what you deliver.

Army of Awesome (Manage + Digital)

This is an updated version of a previous talk; edited for the Manage + Digital conference in Minneapolis.

DPM. What’s that mean? It means Digital Project Manager. Okay? What’s that mean? Think about it—very few people know what it is you actually do every day. Even your mom scratches her head when you explain your job.

You need a simple explanation for the awesomeness that you unleash at work every single day. We all do. We also need a set of standards by which we all operate, because there is no path to follow when it comes to DPM. That ends now. This presentation will rally the DPM community around a set of principles that elevate and strengthen us individually, and as a community of practitioners. Let’s get fired up about who we are and what we do!

Overcoming & Managing Project Challenges Workshop

Leading projects can be tough, particularly in the face of change. But, no matter what you do, you’ll likely encounter some kind of change on any given project. And whether that change is related to people, process, scope, timeline, or budget, you have to sort through it quickly and gracefully to keep your project moving in the right direction.
In this workshop with Brett Harned, we’ll explore typical project red flags and discuss the facets of project change, as well as solutions to make it easier to adapt and lead projects to success.

This workshop is relatable to anyone looking to pick up skills on being a better team leader, team member, employee, and human. Whether you're a designer, developer, PM, or manager, Brett will help you discover new ways to address project issues before they become problems.

Digital PM Workshop | Digital PM Summit 2016

In this six hour workshop, I organize teams around how they work (process) to solve challenges that are often presented by projects and stakeholders. First, a project scenario is presented. Together, teams build project estimates and plans, then share findings, debate ideas, and listen to a short presentation of best practices. The end of the workshop centers on solving more PM-related challenges, which are shared by the group in an exercise and then discussed by the larger group.

The Project Communications Game

Projects can feel like a game: Deliver a winning idea and take two steps forward. Miss a deadline and suddenly you’re back to square one. Sometimes it’s the luck of the draw, but in the game of projects you mostly you have to be a motivated team player with excellent communication skills to win.

Brett’s session will explore the game-like steps of a digital project and the communication wins and pitfalls that come with being positioned in the center of an internal and client team. Roll the dice to see what comes next in the project game as Brett takes on awkward conversations, team conflict, poorly written project updates, unhappy clients, and more. Everyone will win with a series of tips, exercises, and tactics on how to navigate your own Game of Project.

Be a Better PM

This was presented at the Digital PM Summit on October 14, 2013,

You are not a robot, you're a project manager. You are valuable to your team because you're damn good at what you do. Let's think about project management as a practice, and how we can all be better at what we do, and truly support our teams and projects to make amazing products...on time, under budget, and conflict-free. This talk will hit on how WE, as a community of digital project management professionals, can better our skills and elevate the profession through solid practice in communications, stakeholder management, and a little bit of cheerleading.

**This is published under design only because the categories are...not inclusive. :)

Making Projects Easy

This talk was presented at the Future of Web Design 2013 in NYC.

Making “cool stuff" for the people of the Internet is fun, but not always easy. Your clients hire you for your ability to make amazing experiences on the web and in apps, but they also want to be sure that you can keep your projects on the rails. That's where it can get tricky. Relationships between teams and clients can be difficult to navigate, even if the "big idea" comes easily. But that's okay! There are ways to build common goals and processes between client and design teams to lighten project stress and foster a shared creative language. Whether you're a designer, developer, or project manager, you'll find value in improving your communication and collaboration skills.
