Defending Our Vote: The ACLU’s election safeguarding program
President Trump and state lawmakers are trying to interfere in the 2026 midterm elections. The ACLU has a plan to keep power where it belongs — in the hands of the voters.
Across the country, we’re already organizing and mobilizing with our neighbors as part of our largest ever election safeguarding initiative, investing more than $24.5 million to protect our right to vote and empower voters across the country to participate fully in our democracy.
The ACLU's Safeguarding Program
The ACLU’s investment to safeguard the election.
Our current work in courts and on the legal front to defend voting rights.
Volunteers are being trained to protect election results in their communities.
1. The ACLU is building people power to safeguard our elections from interference, because collective action is our strongest defense
As we face unprecedented attacks on the right to vote at all levels of government, we must protect the power of each individual voter. The ACLU is laser-focused on ensuring that every eligible voter can vote, that ballots are fairly counted, that elections are properly certified, and that the will of voters is respected.
That's why the ACLU and our affiliates are organizing our largest ever volunteer mobilization and training program to protect voters before, during, and after the elections.
- We’re holding Know Your Rights trainings and distributing materials across the country to ensure voters feel empowered to vote and know what to do if they face issues at the ballot box.
- We’re training 10,000 volunteers across the country to monitor polling sites and protect election results in their communities.
- We’ll be present in all 50 states and Washington D.C., with six key states identified as needing extra protections.
We are mobilizing communities to respond to threats that would erode their power at the polls
2. The ACLU is fighting anti-democracy officials in court to protect your right to vote
Voter suppression doesn’t just happen during election season. Some legislators are constantly trying to pass restrictive and discriminatory legislation, make it harder to vote, and rig the rules to hold onto power. Following another severe blow to the Voting Rights Act, power-hungry lawmakers have been gerrymandering maps and diluting the power of Black voters, and they won’t stop unless we block them in the courts.
That’s why our voting rights attorneys are fighting for your right to vote in the courtrooms year-round — and they’ll be ready to respond during this year’s midterms.
- We took more than 100 legal actions across 23 states and Puerto Rico to protect voters during the 2024 election — this year, too, we’re prepared to fight back.
- We’ve built responses to 25 different election threat scenarios, so we’re ready to mobilize or launch urgent legal actions.
- Our voting rights attorneys are currently taking over 80 legal actions challenging discriminatory voting laws, racial gerrymandering, attacks on mail voting and voter registration, and other efforts to undermine free and fair elections.
The ACLU is ready to protect the integrity of elections with urgent legal action
3. The ACLU is activating our 54-affiliate network to meet complex, state-specific challenges with localized tactics and reach voters where they are
We know protecting voting rights doesn’t happen just at the national level. Anti-democratic politicians at every level of government are already trying to make it harder to vote by imposing needless barriers to the ballot, shrinking the number of polling sites, or adding onerous documentation requirements.
That’s why we have affiliates staffed with lawyers, policy experts, and organizers and people on the ground in every state ready to defend it.
- We’re mobilizing experienced campaign experts along with our team of voting rights litigators to support affiliates around the country in expanding their election safeguarding plans.
- We’re leveraging our affiliates in all 50 states and Washington D.C., who are experts in the issues that matter most to you.
The ACLU will use its full power to meet threats to our voting rights and elections in any state, county, or precinct where they appear
