Dither Pattern Generator: A New Free Online Tool For Pixel Art

The Dither Pattern Generator is a simple tool which generates a dithering pattern for you. It aims to keep the dithering bands perfectly spaced, unlike many build in gradient tools, which can lead to overlapping or imperfect patterns.

This might be useful for you if you want to add a simple gradient to your pieces, such as in a sky, but want to keep the amount of colors and noise to a minimum.

On it's own it's probably not very useful, it's just a quick and simple tool for very specific situations.

The Final Nail In X's Coffin - Rise of the Bluesky

I'm sure by now you've heard of the downfall of twitter, one of the already most controversial websites. In April 2022, the 2nd generation Apartheid billionaire Elmo Musk bought the website for $44 billion dollars.

Since then, Leon has made a series of changes to the site, which made it clear his mission was never to improve the website, but instead mold it into his own personal playground, that reflected his world views and prioritized protecting "free speech" (hate speech) and

With each change he made, the site got more toxic as more good people left, and now it has become far more toxic than it ever was before (and it already had a reputation for being a horrible place).

Yesterday Twitter announced some changes to their Terms of Service which removed the ability for users to opt out of allowing their content to be used to train twitters AI product, Grock.

In response, Lospec has decided to remove it's social media links to these platforms. So if you look at the footer of Lospec now, you'll see Bluesky and Mastodon have replaced the Twitter and Reddit links. We've also changed the hashtag links on palette pages to prioritize other social media websites - and will remove X in a few months when the last few stragglers finally admit that it's dead.

In the meantime, we highly reccomend moving your social media presense to Bluesky - which has had a huge bump in users over the past day due to these changes - or Mastodon another great well-established option.

For similar reasons (forced AI training, shutting down of APIs, toxic user behavior) we've also shut down the /r/Lospec feed on Reddit, disassociated from /r/PixelArt and will no longer cater to that website.

If you log into Lospec via Twitter or Reddit, I highly reccomend you switch to using another platform such as Discord or Reddit, just to be safe.

Hopefully this is not the end of good social media, but rather the beginning.

Users Can Create Custom Promo Ads To Promote External Projects

posted by skeddles in lospec-updates 0

Users can now upload a 256x256 image of their choosing and have it show on their profile, gallery pieces and palettes. It can include a link to whatever URL you desire.

This could be used to promote your external projects, products, games, or just your personal website or social accounts.

Check out my profile to see an example of it, where I created a link to my personal site, skeddles.com

Currently this feature is available to all patreon members, even the $1 tier.

Patreon members of the $5 tier or higher can choose to hide other people's user ads if they don't want to see them.

To create your own, just go to your settings and look for the User Ad section where you can upload an image and set the URL. It will immediately begin to appearl on your profile and content.

Lospec Dailies Top of Page Revamp

posted by skeddles in lospec-updates 1

This is yet another improvement to the Lospec Dailies system. I've redesigned the top of the page to be more clear and appealing, which less text and easier to find information. The tag and palette are shown in a large clear banner. We also now properly credit the palette and tag submitter. Did you know you can submit tag suggestions for Lospec dailies?

The user of the day section has been removed, as now we have a line on the homepage showcasing them, which is better for them and for the dailies page.

A few days ago I also updated the image generator we use for posting the daily to discord / bluesky, to match this new style which includes the tag.

Hopefully this makes browsing the Lospec Dailies page more appealing, and puts more of a focus onto the art below.

Some Refinements to the Gallery Piece Submission Form

posted by skeddles in lospec-updates 5

I made a few small improvements for when you are submitting a piece to the gallery.

First, you can now adjust thumbnails on mobile! It used to require a mouse to move the thumbnail around, but it should now work with touch screens.

Next, the form will now prevent you from submitting if your thumbnail is blank. If your thumbnail is blank you likely either didn't adjust it, or your piece is in the wrong category, or your pixel art was scaled up even though it doesn't need to be. Hopefully this ensures thumbnails come out better.

Lastly, there was a bug where uploading a filename with a percent sign in it would break the upload form. Not only do we now do a better job of catching and communicating errors like this, the file server will now do a better job of stripping out characters from filenames that might cause a problem.

This is part of an ongoing project to improve our submission process.

What is Lospec?

Lospec is an independent website, created in in 2017 by a bird named skeddles. It was founded on the idea that the internet needs a more modern place to share pixel art, and other similar but less represented art forms. When we launched we only had the palette list and the Lospec Pixel Editor, but over the years we've added many more tools and features. In January of 2020 we launched our first kickstarter, to help fund the Lospec Gallery. After 2 years the gallery was finally released in January of 2023, and continues to be updated with new features and improvements. Our mission to continue to improve the site and add new tools and features that help people create and share art. We are funded mainly by donations, so if you believe in what we're doing please considering becoming a member of our patreon (which will let you browse the site ad-free). (Learn Even More)
