It's interesting, a lot of people say I want to go from being a software engineer to being a forward-deployed engineer. So a forward-deployed engineer is ultimately a forward-deployed engineer. What that concretely means is, first and foremost, you are a software engineer. You build products, you build technologies, and you build solutions for people that actually make their lives better. That middle word is pretty interesting, deployed. Deployed to me means you're generally not in your core office or your core home or your core working area. You are embedded with a customer somewhere displaced from where you normally conduct business or operations. The last word, forward, setting the critical distinction here. By being a forward deployed engineer, so just a deployed engineer, you tend to go to environments where you are not the subject matter expert.
